Z1-R Restoration Tips!!
Here are some good things to know when you begin the restoration or repair of a 1978 Kawasaki Z1-R!:

PAINT:  The original Stardust Silver Metallic is no longer available from any normal source.  I found that the 2004 Acura MDX color "Havasu Blue" is a near exact match, and is a much better paint!  Look for it in your PPG store.

WHEELS:  The original wheels are a machined finish. I had a local guy in Phoenix write a CNC program to cut the wheels perfectly.  This will lremove surface inperfections and staining.  First remove the tires, tubes, wheel weights and rim-locks. Also remove the bearings, seals, and bearing spacers, leaving only the bare wheel castings. Ship the wheels to "Sun Valley Wheels at 3919 South 28th Street, Phoenix, AZ 85040".  They will strip the finish, have the wheels powdercoated in your choice of color (satin black is typical) and then will machine the finish for a PERFECT factory looking wheel.  Call Matt @ 602-276-1025.

TIRES:  Bridgestone makes a set of replacement tires for the Z1-R that are near exact duplicates of the original Dunlops.  They are called "Accolade" series.  One note: If you plan to show the bike, you may be docked points for "non-original" tires.  In this situation, you are expected to use the same "brand" of tire (Dunlop), rather than ones that actually "look" correct.  Go figure...

SEAT COVER:  There is a guy from San Diego that advertises covers on Ebay for about $40 or so.  They are EXCELLENT reproductions.

FEDERAL ID TAG:  I can provide a repro Federal ID Tag for your steering head that is EXTREMELY close to the original.  You can strip and repaint or powdercoat the frame without worrying about taping off the old beat up tag. All I need is the Date and VIN number found on the old tag.

WINDSHIELD:  The original plastic windshields are all but gone.  The last one I found was $350!  You can buy one from Gustafsson Plastics for about $99.  They have a gold stamp on them that is easily removable using a tiny bit of Simichrome polish.  You will also have to measure and drill for the rubber surround that attaches at the top edge, if you plan on keeping it "original".

HEADLAMP SEAL:  The original Kaw seals for the headlamp bulb are no longer produced.  You can buy one for a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy that is nearly identical!

INSTRUMENTS:  Use this link if you need to have your Tach, Speedo or other instruments cleaned or rebuilt.  They come out BEAUTIFULLY!:  http://www.z1enterprises.com/reference/zresto_home.aspx

GENERAL PARTS:  PowerSportsPro.com has a large quantity of OEM parts still available through Japanese suppliers.  They are NOT "cheap", and they are NOT "fast!"  But, they have a bunch of great stuff!!

PARTS MANUAL:  You may need a parts manual to identify numbers (the best way to source parts) and to show you EXACTLY how things are supposed to be assembled.  This manual also provides exact sizes of o-rings, seals, and fasteners.  Kawasaki put these on microfiche.  I have a limited supply of these manuals that I converted from original Kawasaki microfiche onto paper.

THIS MONTH'S TOPIC!

"I want to restore my Classic motorcycle.  How much will it cost?".

Now THERE is a very difficult question to answer!  The two leading Triumph restorers will accept your old Bonneville and $12,000 to get started.  Think that's CRAZY?  Think again.

The featured Norton N15CS project has taken nearly a full year to complete!  Only part of the project is the assembly of restored parts.  Many hours go into the locating of correct pieces, and working with the best vendors.

Typically, the Brit bikes are tougher; partly due to their high rates of wear.  Most everything mechanical will need attention! The other problem is that each marque has some irregularities.  Many Brit models vary from bike to bike simply due to the use of left-over parts, changes in running production, and mergers or buy outs which blend parts from both companies!

The N15 is such a bike, with Norton power, Matchless frame, and AMC transmission.  These are often referred to as "hybrid" bikes.  The good thing is that most Brit bikes remained relatively unchanged year after year, and many parts are used consistently in many different models (Lucas, etc).  They also have a high amount of enthusiast loyalty, which keeps the parts supply going.

Japanese models tend to be consistent, and restorations of the same models should be painless.  However, parts are often hard to find as these bikes did not seem to earn the same affection as non-Japanese models. Parts for these older bikes simply faded away as new models came out each year! Also, Japanese bikes are EXTREMELY COMPLICATED, with many having nearly TWICE as many parts as an American or Brit bike!  The good news is that Japanese bikes tend to remain quite mechanically sound if cared for, and you will find most will need cosmetic work more than anything else.

The best answer to restoring that old clunker in the barn?  "SELL IT, AND BUY A BIKE ALREADY DONE!"  I know that sounds bad coming from a guy that retores bikes, but the fact is that you will SAVE time and money buying a bike that has already been completed!  If you have to restore the one you have, be prepared to spend a bundle!  The good thing is, they sure are beautiful when done!  Old Bikes Rule!
